Historic 44ft traditional stern narrowboat powered by a Ruston & Hornsby 2YWA engine
A rare opportunity to own an historic boat with lots of character.
Originally a working boat, Ariel is a 44ft traditional styled Narrowboat with a fine history.
Originally built in 1935 by ‘W.J. Yarwood & Sons’ of Northwich for the ‘Midlands and Coast Canal Carrying Ltd’ and registered in Wolverhampton as No.1143. In 1938 The company was taken over Fellows, Morton & Clayton Ltd and carried their fleet No. 351 before once again changing hands with the Nationalisation of the waterways becoming No. 735/7 of British Waterways NW Division.
The original 1935 section of the hull is constructed with a solid elm base-plate and riveted iron hull sides.
In 1995 the stern was replaced by ‘Warwickshire Fly Boat Co’ and in the same year the 1950's Ruston & Hornsby 2YWA diesel engine installed.
The rear cabin area is fully welded construction and the front section is covered by an A-frame lined with Tongue & Groove with clear ceiling.
The interior is spacious and open plan and set out in a manner to show off the construction, engine and drive train.
Ariel is fitted out in a basic manner sympathetic of her age and heritage but still has ample scope for the new owner to stamp their own identity.
In the main cabin is a worktop fitted with a stainless sink and a gas hob, a bench seat that can also be arranged to be used a double bed.
In the rear is what would have been a boatman’s cabin which still has a solid fuel stove fitted.
Ariel is located in Bristol Harbour. Appointments to view with the owner should be made via this office
